Overhead Crane

An overhead crane is a permanent type of lifting equipment that is usually installed within a building for material handling. Overhead cranes are sometimes referred to as Electric Overhead Travelling Cranes, EOTC’s, Bridge Cranes, Gantry Cranes, Workshop Cranes and Factory Cranes. They consist of parallel runways with a bridge spanning the gap. The hoist unit travels along the bridge  while the bridge itself is capable of travelling up and down the runways.

A gantry crane can also refer to a crane rigidly supported on two or more legs running on a fixed rail at ground level, for this see ‘Goliath Cranes’.
