Height Safety Equipment
As a company with many employees servicing thousands of cranes and lifting equipment all over the UK we of course have a significant responsibility towards their safety. One of the most dangerous aspects of working on overhead travelling cranes is the height factor and the associated risk of falling. As a result Granada have invested much time and resources into investigating the best working practices and equipment available in the market today to help keep our engineers safe when they are working on your site. We feel that our knowledge of this can only be of benefit to our customers and therefore we are pleased to be able to offer our advice and experience as well as supplying height safety equipment and products that are both of good quality and competitively priced.
Whether it be a full length fabricated service platform, a couple of harness suspension points or a new harness Granada can advise and assist with almost any height safety equipment requirement including:
-
Ladder access lines

Harnesses
Harnesses are the element that the user wears in order to connect themselves, via a suitable lanyard, to the chosen anchor point. They are a part of height safety equipment that is worn by the user and therefore they have to be strong and safe but also as comfortable and unrestricting of movement as possible. Granada offers a range of harnesses, which are available in different sizes.
Standard Harnesses
The HT / ET range of standard harnesses are intended to create an anchorage point on the operator to form a fall-arrest system to protect him against a fall when performing work at heights. A fall-arrest harness is the only device which can be worn on a body in a fall-arrest system.
Depending on the type of harness, there are several possible uses :
- Harness with back anchorage point: fall-arrest safety for working at heights,
- Harness with back and chest anchorage point: same harness with back anchorage point + work positioning, safety when climbing ladder,…
- Harness with belt anchorage point: fall-arrest safety according to type and anchorage points available, belt anchorage point for work positioning. In a work positioning system, the lanyard must be maintained tensioned and freedom movement must be limited to 0.6 m maximum.
- The HT R harnesses are similar to the HT harnesses, but equipped with an additional stitched rescue lanyard on the shoulder straps. This lanyard enables the rescuer to efficiently evacuate the injured person. The harnesses are fitted with a label located near the rescue lanyard D-ring used for attachment. The label specifies that the lanyard must only be used for rescue operations.
- The Ladytrac™ harnesses are primarily intended for women. Their special, patented design allows them to perfectly adapt to a woman’s body. The harnesses are equipped with a vest for easy fitting.

Lanyards & Fall Arresters
Fall arresters are the mechanism of the fall arrest system, which is attached between the harness and an anchoring point. They perform the task of stopping the fall as quickly as possible. Granada has access to a wide range of shock absorbing fall arrest lanyards, fall restraint lanyards and retractable lanyards with many additional features such as single or twin legs, made of aluminium or steel with rope or webbing materials.
Blocflor 10 AES - Fall arrester
Blocflor 10 AES – Fall arrester
The AES system ensures the user will sustain an impact of less than 600 daN in the event of a fall, even where the cable has been completely unwound. The AES system reduces the strength and velocity of an impact on the user’s body in the event of a fall. It efficiently protects the end of the strap secured to the end of the cable against the risks of rupture which can be caused by the sharp edges found on terrace roofs.
The main advantages of the Blocfor™ 10 AES automatic fall arresters are:
- Integration of AES system on cable end.
- Eliminates the risk of violent impact in the event of a fall, even when the cable is fully unwound.
- Easy to grasp and carry and install.
- Simplified maintenance by optimised design.
The casing is manufactured out of polyamide with ABS fibre, This material does not fade under exposure to UV rays and is highly resistant to impacts and ageing. The unit features a stop mechanism equipped with a single pawl, eliminating the risk of interference of pawls with respect to each other, and reducing the pawl engage time in the toothed wheel of the brake.
The brake pawl and toothed wheel are made of aluminium bronze preventing the risk of sparks in the event of a fall.
The mechanism does not require any special tools to check the safety components.Other features include:
- Compact size.
- Ergonomically designed for easy gripping by hand.
- Anchor point designed to receive large-diameter connectors.
- Cable end equipped with patented Tractel® AES system.

Energy Absorbing Lanyard
The system allows the user to safely move over a perimeter of 2 meters maximum around the anchorage point.
The unit is available in two versions.Lanyard equipped with tear-type energy absorber.
A lanyard with tear-type energy absorber is a rope lanyard, made of braided rope or strap on which a tear-type energy absorber is added at the end of the lanyard. The strap lanyard can have a fixed length (strap lanyard) or a variable length (elastic strap lanyard). The elastic feature shortens the length of the lanyard when not tensioned by the user, thus eliminating any interference when the user is moving from one position to another. The tear-type energy absorber is formed by a tear-type energy absorbing strap protected by a sheath. By the effect of the fall, the strap tears, dissipating the energy. After a fall, the lanyard is elongated and must not be used again.
Tubular strap lanyard equipped with a POY energy absorber inside
A POY lanyard is a tubular strap lanyard equipped with a POY energy absorber integrated in the strap.By the effect of a fall, the webbing of the POY absorber elongates to dissipate the energy. After a fall, the lanyard is elongated and must notbe used again
Adjustable Lanyards
Work station lanyards are one component of the fall arrest system; their task is to connect a safety belt to an anchoring point. They can be used as a maintenance system, in which case they restrict the worker’s movements. They are equipped with a setting system to adjust the length, so that the worker is held in his working position. They cannot be used as fall arresters by themselves. The lanyard may be formed as a rope or line or as a line with metal cable armour.

Rescue Systems
Provision of safety lines, attachment points and harnesses is great way to help reduce or prevent a fatality occurring in a fall from height situation however if an operative were to fall there is still the issue of how to retrieve a colleague who is suspended following a fall from height. Usually following such an incident colleagues will be quite stressed as to how to retrieve their fallen workmate however who and how the rescue is to take place must be carefully considered and calmly and safely executed to prevent further injuries occurring to the fallen or their rescuers. Because of the issue of suspension trauma it is imperative to try and retrieve the fallen colleague as quickly as possible to prevent further injury but this should not come at the cost of injury to others.
Tractel Derope Descender
The Derope™ descender is a controlled-speed evacuation device and forms part of Tractels comprehensive range of height safety equipment. It is designed to evacuate either one person (up to 150 kg) for a height of up to 400 meters or 2 persons (up to 225 kg) for a height of up to 200 meters. The system allows for sequencing several consecutive round-trip descents, thus making it possible to descend groups of persons, while monitoring the maximum number of consecutive descents authorized. The Derope™ descender is designed for use on sites located at heights which could require emergency evacuation, such as wind turbines, aerial cable cars, derricks, etc. The Tractel® Derope™ range can be used at temperatures between +50°C and –35°C. During the utilization the speed of coming down is stabilized 2 meters maximum by second per one load of 30 Kg to 225 Kg.
Granada has access to a range of rescue systems and training in their safe use. If you would like any information on these please contact us to discuss which system is best suited to your needs.
