Problem Solving

After carrying out the servicing and repairs for 12 months at newly acquired customer, a leader in Europe and on a world scale in the steel and metallurgical sector, we noticed that although the majority of their cranes were now having the expected reduction in repairs, unusually, they were still experiencing multiple problems with two of their hoists.
Granada undertook, in partnership with the customer, to investigate these problems and to substantiate the cause by carrying out multiple tests and recording critical data. From the results we quickly established that the hoists supplied were not specified to carry out the work load the cranes were now carrying out. We in turn calculated and specified replacement hoist units which would be capable of fulfilling the customer’s needs. At the same time it was decided to replace the power side of the C rail systems on the two cranes due to excessive wear and to fit radio control systems to prevent breakdowns caused by operator abuse of the pendants.
The radio system benefits proved to be so effective that the customer opted to have additional systems fitted to 8 other cranes. This proved to be a cost effective way of improving the plant equipment and reducing crane and in turn production downtime, without the need and expense of purchasing replacement new cranes. Following the completion of this work, the customer is now contently reaping the reward.
